Neil Evans: Photographing Flowers with Neil Evans

Join Brecksville's star floral photographer for an informative, often funny recounting of his life as a gardener and photographer. Neil is a member of the Dahlia Society, four Rose Societies and recently achieved the status of “Consulting Rosarian. “ One of his photos was Kodak “photo of the day” appearing in Times Square and his Olympiad rose appears on the American Rose Society Visa Card. “Photography can really become addictive. I suppose many of us develop these passions that begin to define us.” Neil, an Artist Member of BCA, jokes that he will show you how you, too, can loose money while pursuing your passion!

Neil Evans started growing his own roses soon after his father and he built their home in Brecksville in 1973. “I had from 30 to 50 roses for years. After I joined the Western Reserve Rose Society, the Cleveland Rose Society, and Forest City Rose Society in recent years, my number of roses dramatically increased. I now have over 100 roses. I entered a rose photography contest in 2004 in the American Rose magazine and won two-first places as a novice and actually ten other lesser places too. In fact, the rose that won for the category “abstract expressionism” was featured in an article by Suzanne Hively in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 2005.”

Neil sells floral cards at the BCA Shoppe for Art on Highland and at other gift shops in the area. “I am also really happy and honored that the Cleveland Botanical Garden considers them good enough to sell in their gift store.”

Barbara Krans Jenkins: Painting with Colored Pencils, GOURDeous gourds
Barbara Krans Jenkins enjoys working on location, whether it is doing a scenic vista, a delicate Botanical study or a more elaborate painting, selecting forest floor microcosms from the abundant flora and fauna around her. It is always important to her to capture the delicate ecological balance of her subjects in their environment. She finds her subject matter from her Cuyahoga Valley National Park home; west, across our land to the Mendocino headlands of Northern California.

Jenkins paintings hang in galleries, corporate and private collections here and abroad. To date, her work has been published in eight books; The Ultimate Guide to Painting From Photographs, Colored Pencil Explorations, by Janie Gildow, Artist's Photo Reference - Buildings & Barns, by Gary Greene, Artist's Photo Reference, FLOWERS by Gary Greene, The Best of Flower Painting edited by Kathy Kipp, Creative Colored Pencil Landscapes by Vera Curnow, Creative Colored Pencil, A Step by Step Guide by Vera Curnow, and Introduction to Figure Drawing, by Philip Wigg.

Although Barbara works in oil, pastels and watercolor on occasion, she prefers the control, blending quality and convenience of the dry painting medium of professional grade Colored Pencil pigments (oil-based, water based, and/or wax based), often over fine ink contour lines. Her love of line is clear in her work. Some say that as she applies her pigments, her subjects spring to life, right off the surface of the paper! In the last year, a new direction has been turning gourds into Fine Art Sculptured Vases. See her website to view these exciting unique creations. Barbara is affiliated with several art groups, among them, the Colored Pencil Society of America and Akron Society of Artists (Signature member.) She also served as Director of the Art Gallery of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron, OH (1996-2006).

Sean Kollar:
Cartooning and Manga
Sean Kollar has an Associate Degree in Commercial Art from Cuyahoga Community College and has been drawing since the fifth grade when a friend showed him his first comic book. Since then he’s done everything he can to achieve his goal of having his comics published. Sean just finished illustrating a fourteen-page comic for a friend’s book. The book’s introduction, Tales from the Library, explains how to catalogue comics and will be published in 2006. In addition to illustrating, Sean enjoys writing and is currently working on the script to accompany a comic he is illustrating.

He has taught at Brecksville Center for the Arts since 2004 and also teaches in various county libraries. His teaching career has taken him by surprise. "I always had questions about how to draw things and when I was growing up I could never find some one to give me the answers. Now I’m the answer for the kids of today." At BCA Sean teaches Cartooning I, II and III, Fantasy Art, Anatomy for Cartooning and will teach Computer Animation for BCA in 2007.

When describing his approach to teaching Sean says he believes in a back-to-basics approach. "I believe you need to know how to do the fundamentals before you can master the art. Once you know the basics you can reach for the stars!"
