AP Studio Art: Reflections 2005
Brecksville - Broadview Heights High School has been developing a strong visual art program for many years. Our students excel in their work and take pride in realizing their artistic vision. BBHHS students consistently stand out in regional, state and national art competition, so, in 2003, the art department decided to give art students a chance to work at a college level as they do in many other disciplines at our high school. This exhibition highlights the second year that our students have completed the AP Studio Art process.

AP Studio Art is one of 13 Advanced Placement courses, (sanctioned and graded by the College Board), offered at BBHHS. Within AP Studio Art, students may elect to develop portfolios in Drawing, 2-Dimensional Design or 3-Dimensional Design. This rigorous course of study allows our young artists to develop self-discipline and technical and design awareness they need if they pursue a vocation or avocation in visual art. They produce a volume of artwork within a year that shows consistent quality and growth. The work is divided into three sections for their portfolios. The Breadth section demonstrates student knowledge of technique, concept and mastery of a variety of materials. The Concentration allows students to develop a body of work based on a particular visual or conceptual concern. From these sections five Quality pieces are selected to represent the student's personal best.
The most important goal of taking the AP Studio Art course is to learn to think and work like an artist of serious intent. Another very nice benefit for working at the college level is that many colleges and universities accept a passing AP Studio Art grade for college credit. Perhaps a deeper benefit for our students is that standards of excellence are raised and students gain confidence in every area of their lives with mastery of visual literacy.
This exhibition offers select works from several portfolios completed this year. It is hoped that young artists and their parents will find this collection inspiring and a motivation for planning to take the AP Studio Art course their junior or senior year in high school.
The students and families of this year's AP Studio Art class would like to thank the Brecksville Center for the Arts for hosting this exhibit. This vital link between our school and the community is an important way to illuminate the creative spirit of our children.
